Book & Article Recommendation

Just a few random thoughts in regards to what our role as Christians in America is in the international arena. I would recommend the book: Let the Nations Be Glad by John Piper. This book has a wealth of scripture which emphasizes that the fuel & goal in any efforts to serve other nations/people-should be passion and zeal for God's glory. Just an encouragement for us all to grow in knowing and being amazed by God.

Also, I read another article recently by John Piper – Israel,...

For Pete's Sake; Myrtle Trees; and Knowing God

I’m glad Nate wrote a piece on going back to foundations. It helped spark my imagination and think about some of those things we do or say and don’t know why. For Pete’s Sake is one of them. I think everyone has heard the expression, and probably every one has used it. Just who is Pete? And why do we care about his “sake?” Well, we may have used this phrase but few people ask about it. Actually, the phrase is, “For peace’ sake,” taken from proper English. But, like most things in America...

We must remember the foundational truths, not just the outward forms

I have been confronted recently with the issue of holding onto beliefs and traditions without understanding or remembering what deeper issue is behind them. It can be quite dangerous-- in fact, it could be spiritually fatal.

Here's an example: as an Anabaptist (a Mennonite, to be specific) we hold to believers' baptitsm, as opposed to baptizing infants. This emphasis on believers' baptism is a legacy from our founders, who during the Reformation split from the Catholic, Lutheran,...

The Commonplace Coffee House

One thing that ChristianityisMore has been dedicated to since the very beginning is acting and living in a Christ-like manner. As we have seen in Nate's last entry, tne way that we can do this is by supporting businesses that are socially responsible and the people behind those businesses.

With this in mind I would like to plug The Commonplace Coffee House in Indiana, PA; the place where nearly every part of CIM was created. They just introduced a new web-site, so please go check it out...

An Alternate Economy

I want to discuss an idea that is, in many ways, directly connected to immigration.

Illegal immigration, after all, is for the most part caused by poverty and desperation in Central America. This poverty has complex causes, including the ravages of civil war, oppressive government, and the various exploits of global capitalist corporations.

I have already frequently ranted about these issues. Today, I want to try to formulate what I think might begin correcting these problems...

Inadequacy of Words

I've been thinking about what it means to be a Christian a lot lately and how God works in our lives. I came across a story by Donald Miller the other day from his book "Searching for God Knows What" that has made me think about what being a Christian means. Here is the story:

Each year I teach a class on the gospel and culture at a small Bible college back East. This year I asked the students to list the precepts a person would need to understand in order to become a Christian....

A Meditation on Compassion

As I have explained on this blog site in the past, I left the Church for about 3 years because of events leading up to the War, the war, and differences in politics that I felt affected ideology and theology. During that period I found myself highly critical of certain denominations. I would often say things to the effect of: this Church only believes in the gospel of money, or a Church that supports murder (the war) is a Church that has wondered far away from God, or a Church that...

More on global climate change

Jeff brought up Al Gore's new movie, so I thought it appropriate to review a book on the same subject: Michael Crichton's State of Fear.

I never paid terribly close attention to global warming until recently, when I read this book. It prompted me to do more research on the issue, which has helped me realize that it’s substantially more complicated than it looks to the casual observer. Following is my mixed reaction to Crichton’s information.

First, Crichton reminds us that we should...

Movie Review: An Inconvienent Truth

Jess and I went to Pittsburgh yesterday to see the Movie "The Inconvienent Truth," aka., the Al Gore movie. Okay, okay, so I know about half the readers are now cheering and half are groaning that I would choose to review this movie, but I ask you to please withold judgment for the space of a few paragraphs. In providing full disclosure, I must first admit that I am a big Al Gore fan, so my opinions are biased, though I will try to focus on what really matters in the...

Jumping right in: Pornography, the First Amendment, and the Church

Yeah, so Jeff asked me to write on this great blog quite some time ago, but life seems to have gotten randomly crazy every time I try. Also, topic choice has been a hard one for me because I often don't have the opportunity in my day to think of things such as social justice etc (except as it applies to teaching a two year old to do unto others...suppose that is a type of social conscience). Anyway, my personal and professional life are beginning to once again converge, and I have hit the...
